UMass Boston was the first to offer a Ph.D. program with an official green chemistry track. They now also offer a stand-alone Master's degree with waived tuition and a teaching stipend, which is a rare benefit. The historic area is a modern science and green chemistry hub, with numerous biotech startups in Boston, the Warner Babcock Center for Green Chemistry in Wilmington, and the Green Chemistry and Commerce Council in Lowell.
