Where can I study green chemistry?

Browse programs now: location or degree

If you're fascinated by what you've read here and want to develop a career in green chemistry, you have a lot of options! New courses and specializations in green and sustainable chemistry are springing up around the world. Browse the directory by location or degree to see options for graduate programs, potential supervisors who are interested in green chemistry, and feedback from real students. As for undergraduates, any chemistry program will prepare you for graduate studies in green chemistry, but seek out classes in toxicology, catalysis, environmental chemistry, and life-cycle analysis to give yourself an edge.

Already enrolled?

Want to go into green chemistry, but currently attending a school that offers no relevant courses? It might not seem like it, but you have so many options! Start your own green chemistry student group. Gather a couple of like-minded students and self-educate using free online resources. Get departmental funding to invite a visiting lecturer, or even host a mini-symposium. Attend a green chemistry summer program. Find a summer internship related to your interest. Any or all of these accomplishments will look great on your CV when it comes time to apply to grad school or jobs. See options for all of these below:

NESSE Student Groups Support

Interested in starting a student group, but lost on where to start? NESSE (Network of Early-Career Sustainable Scientists and Engineers) can help! This free guide will walk you through the process of starting your own green chemistry interest group, and if you need more help, NESSE has a dedicated student group coordinator (groups@sustainablescientists.org) who can offer assistance.

ACS Summer School on Green Chemistry and Sustainable Energy

A free summer program from the American Chemical Society, open to graduate students and postdocs studying in the United States, Canada, and Latin America. Transportation, housing, meals, program costs, and even visa costs are covered for all attendees.

GC3 Safer Chemistry Training

The Green Chemistry and Commerce Council has created a series of free online presentations aimed at improving green chemistry knowledge. They range from introductory (level 1) to advanced (level 5), and cover business aspects as well as toxicology and other scientific tools for safer chemistry.

UoW Green Chemistry & Chemical Stewardship Online Certificate Program

This three-course program is offered online by the University of Washington, and features content in green chemistry, sustainability, and environmental health. It costs just under $3000 in total for all three courses, or $910 per course if taken individually. Great for professionals who would like to learn about green chemistry from the experts.

ACS Green Chemistry Workshops

The American Chemical Society holds green chemistry workshops at their annual GC&E conference, as well as some other ACS National Meetings, so if you're attending one of these conferences, keep an eye out! Open to undergraduate and graduate students as well as postdocs.

MPCA Green Chemistry Internships

In the past, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has awarded grants to Minnesota companies to support a green chemistry intern. Keep an eye on their Safer Product Chemistry page for announcements of future internships.
