Carnegie Mellon University has a relatively small, but strong, chemistry department, housed in the historic Mellon Institute not far from the center of Pittsburgh. It is home to the Institute for Green Science, a lab run by Professor Terry Collins which focuses on development of his innovative oxidation catalysts.

STUDENTS SAY...

The Institute for Green Science focuses on sustainable and green chemistry as it applies to environmental remediation of micropollutants. The opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations with environmental health researchers around the world are excellent.

The chemistry building is a bit gloomy, but the city of Pittsburgh is a really amazing place to live! There are a lot of lively neighborhoods with a mix of families and students, and there are always events going on and new independent businesses popping up.
